Enrique Iglesias- A Success Story
Enrique Iglesias is a Spanish singer, songwriter and occasional actor of Spanish and Filipino descent, popular in both the Latin market and the Hispanic American market in the United States. He was born on May 8, 1975. He is the son of the famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias and Isabel Prysler-a Filipina beauty . Within five years of beginning his musical career in the 1990s, he became the biggest seller of Spanish-language albums of that decade. He made his crossover into the mainstream English language market before the turn of the millennium, signing a multi-album deal with Universal Music Group for an unprecedented US $50,000,000 with Universal Music Latino to release his Spanish albums and Interscope to release English albums. In 2010, he parted with Interscope and signed with another Universal Music Group label, Universal Republic.
Iglesias has sold over 100 million records worldwide(over 70 million albums), making him one of the best selling Spanish language artists of all time. He has had five Billboard Hot 100 top five singles, including two number-ones, and holds the record for producing 22 number-one Spanish-language singles on the Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks. He has also had ten number-one songs on Billboard's Dance charts, more than any other single male artist. Altogether, Iglesias has amassed 68 number-one rankings on the various Billboard charts. Billboard has called him The King of Latin Pop and The King of Dance. Billboard also named Enrique the number two Latin artist of the years 1986–2011 (Luis Miguel taking the first spot). Jose Rizal- Philippine National Hero
José Protacio Mercado Alonzo y Realonda Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 and died on December 30, 1896. He was a Chinese Filipino polymath, patriot and the most prominent advocate for reform in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. He is regarded as the foremost Filipino patriot and is listed as one of the national heroes of the Philippines by the National Heroes Committee. His execution day in 1896, now known as Rizal Day, is a national holiday in the Philippines.
He was born to a rich family in Calamba, Laguna and was the seventh of eleven children. He attended the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, earning a Bachelor of Arts, and enrolled in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas. He continued his studies at the Universidad Central de Madrid in Madrid, Spain, earning the degree of Licentiate in Medicine. He also attended the University of Paris and earned a second doctorate at the University of Heidelberg.
Rizal was a polyglot, conversant in twenty-two languages. He was a prolific poet, essayist, diarist, correspondent, and novelist whose most famous works were his two novels, Noli me Tangere and El filibusterismo. These social commentaries on Spanish rule formed the nucleus of literature that inspired peaceful reformists and armed revolutionaries alike.
As a political figure, José Rizal was the founder of La Liga Filipina, a civic organization that subsequently gave birth to the Katipunan led by Andrés Bonifacio, which would start the Philippine Revolution against Spain, leading to the foundation of the First Philippine Republic under Emilio Aguinaldo. He was a proponent of achieving Philippine self-government peacefully through institutional reform rather than through violent revolution, although he would support "violent means" as a last resort. Rizal believed that the only justification for national liberation and self-government is the restoration of the dignity of the people, saying "Why independence, if the slaves of today will be the tyrants of tomorrow?" The general consensus among Rizal scholars is that his execution by the Spanish government ignited the Philippine Revolution. Source: Wikipedia

Family Dynasty in Philippine Politics
The Marcos Family Dynasty
Politics in the Philippines has always been under the control of a few notable and rich families. It is very common for a politician's son, wife, brother, cousins or other kinsman, to run for the same or other government office. Thus the Philippines is really not a true democracy but an oligarchy.
This can be traced back to the Spanish colonial times where favored families are of the mestizo stock, that is Filipinos with Spanish blood. During this period and later, family names such as Cojuangcos, Lopezes, Marcoses, Osmeñas and Aquinos became household names. In Marinduque, the family names of Nievas, Nepomucenos and Reyeses were popular political names.
The Constitution of the Philippines in 1987 states in Article II Section 26, "The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law." Political dynasties have been a present staple in Philippine political arena since 1946.
Many have called for the Congress to pass the Anti-Dynasty Law, but this bill has been passed over by each Congress since 1987. Some have pointed that oligarchy is the root problem of all the corruption in the Philippine government.
An Empirical Analysis of Political Dynasties in the 15th Philippine Congress by Ronald Mendoza and others from the Asian Institute of Management concluded that on the average, political dynasties possess higher net worth and win in elections by larger margins of victory compared to non-dynastic representatives. Their dynastic jurisdictions are also associated with lower standards of living (as measured by average income) and lower human development (as measured by the Human Development Index), and higher levels of deprivation (as measured by poverty incidence, poverty gap, and poverty severity).
This paper indicates that political dynasties are not good for the Philippines and must be prohibited. An Anti-Dynasty Law must be passed, but since 75% of the law makers are members of the Dynasty clan, it will be impossible for this law to pass. There is a saying that this law will only pass if Hell freezes in the Philippines.
Among the Family Dynasties as listed in Wikipedia are as follows: the Abad family in Batanes, the Arroyo Family of Pampanga, the Marcos Family of Ilocos Norte, The Cojuangco Family of Tarlac, the Reyes Family of Marinduque and Palawan, The Aquino Family of Sorsogon and Agusan del Sur and the Recto family of Batangas. The Wikipedia listed more than 80 names that are associated with political dynasties.
It would appear that in Marinduque, the Reyes Dynasty will continue. I read in FaceBook today, that Gina Reyes daughter of the current governor, Carmencita Reyes has submitted her candidacy for Governor in the next year elections. The Reyes clan had been in Marinduque politics for more than 40 years. Is the political dynasty system good for Marinduque? Your comments will be appreciated.

545 vs 300M People Plus Taxes Equals Politician
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE I RECEIVED FROM MY E-MAIL YESTERDAY. IT IS WORTH YOUR TIME! READ IT!
"I don't know when this was written, it appears to be current and very Interesting. Charley Reese's Final column! COMPLETELY NEUTRAL! Be sure to Read the Poem at the end. Charley Reese has been a journalist for 49 years. He is retiring and this is HIS LAST COLUMN. Be sure to read the Tax List at the end".
545 vs. 300,000,000 People -By Charlie Reese
Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.
Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.
You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.
If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ...
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators,to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible. They, and they alone, have the power. They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses. Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees... We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Is Jessica Sanchez a Threat to Charice Singing Career?
Is Jessica Sanchez, a threat to Charice Pempengco singing career? This idea was brought to my attention from a comment from my nephew in response to my article in this blog yesterday. The title of my article was " Jessica Sanchez Not Qualified to be Included in the Filipino Pride List". The article was my reaction to Courtney Blooding, Charice manager comments regarding Sanchez as not a true Filipino, since she do not speak Tagalog and was not born in the Philippines so she is not qualified or worthy to be included as a Filipino Pride list. Here's the comment of my nephew, Reagan Katague Gregorio:
"Aside from being jealous, Blooding sees Jessica Sanchez as a big threat to Charice. She knows that Jessica is full of talent and she's massively appealing as well.
Beside seeing Jessica as a competition, why don't she try to work out that the two great talents work together in a collaborative album and do some concert tours together. It's good for business as well as for everyone's career including that of Blooding's as well."
Very well-thought and intuitive comment, indeed!
Here's another comment from my FaceBook friend, Sheila Evano of Bellarocca Resort, Marinduque.
"Only because her mother was from here, born here. citizenship another matter. but it is true that we filipinos always try to look abroad & see if a successful person has filipino blood & we rejoice in it. But some of these individuals are not even openly admitting this until someone asks them if they have filipino blood."
Here was my response to Sheila: "Good point, Sheila. I have no admiration or desire to associate with Filipino-Americans that are ashamed of their Filipino ancestry even if they are famous or rich.
Any one disagree? I will be glad to hear from you.

Romantic Music to start the Fall Season
The following video is one of my favorite romantic classical pieces. If you agree please let me know.
Here's another version of the Adagio from the Secret Garden. The background in this video reminds me of our 12 years in Maryland during the Fall Season, the Longwood Gardens in Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania and the Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C. during the heights of the autumn season. Both gardens is must visit during the Fall season of you love Gardens. Enjoy!

Jessica Sanchez Not Qualified in the Filipino Pride List
Do You Really Care if Jessica Sanchez is Included in the Filipino Pride List or Not?
I was just reading an article from my fellow blogger from Iloilo, Philippines, Dave DeWall regarding Charice Pempengco new manager, Courtney Blooding, comments on Twitter. Blodding twitted that she does not feel comfortable about the warm welcome of Filipino-Mexican-American idol 2012 runner-up, Jessica Sanchez to the Philippines. In addition, Blooding twitted that Sanchez should not be included in the Filipino Pride List because she is not really a true blooded Filipino. In addition, she does not speak Tagalog and was not born in the Philippines. There were other reasons listed, but do you really care. I don't care!
I agree that Sanchez is really not a pure blooded Filipino, but she is indeed a Filipino-American. Her mother was born in the Philippines and her father has Mexican ancestry. She grew up with Filipino and Mexican family values.
I believe Blooding comments was based on jealousy. Or perhaps a ploy for advertising for Clarice. Clarice do not need any more advertising. She is a popular singer and is known through out the world.
Thus, Blooding comment is unnecessary and uncalled for. I will definitely add Sanchez name in my list of Filipino-American Pride. Currently, I am writing a series on famous Filipino-American in the fields of entertainment, sports, science, medicine, politics and philanthropy.
In case you have not heard, The American Idols top ten Live Tour of 2012 is now in Manila. What do you think? Comments appreciated.

Do You Know Dr Fe del Mundo?
Fe del Mundo, was born on November 27, 1911 and died on August 6, 2011. She was a Filipina pediatrician. The first woman admitted as a student of the Harvard Medical School, she founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines. Her pioneering work in pediatrics in the Philippines in an active medical practice that spanned 8 decades] won her international recognition, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1977. In 1980, she was conferred the rank and title of National Scientist of the Philippines while in 2010, she was conferred the Order of Lakandula.
Del Mundo was noted for her pioneering work on infectious diseases in Philippine communities. Undeterred by the lack of well-equipped laboratories in post-war Philippines, she would not hesitate to send specimens or blood samples for analysis abroad. In the 1950s, she pursued studies on dengue fever, a common malady in the Philippines of which little was then yet known. Her clinical observations on dengue, and the findings of research she later undertook on the disease are said to "have led to a fuller understanding of dengue fever as it afflicts the young". She authored over a hundred articles, reviews and reports in medical journals on such diseases as dengue, polio and measles. She also authored "Textbook of Pediatrics", a fundamental medical text used in Philippine medical schools.
Del Mundo was active in the field of public health, with special concerns towards rural communities. She organized rural extension teams to advise mothers on breastfeeding and child care. and promoted the idea of linking hospitals to the community through the public immersion of physicians and other medical personnel to allow for greater coordination among health workers and the public for common health programs such as immunization and nutrition. She called for the greater integration of midwives into the medical community, considering their more visible presence within rural communities. Notwithstanding her own devout Catholicism, she is an advocate of family planning and population control.
Del Mundo was also known for having devised an incubator made out of bamboo, designed for use in rural communities without electrical power. In 1980, President Ferdinand Marcos named del Mundo as a National Scientist of the Philippines, the first Filipino woman to be so-named.
Among the international honors bestowed on del Mundo was the Elizabeth Blackwell Award for Outstanding Service to Mankind, handed in 1966 by Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and the citation as Outstanding Pediatrician and Humanitarian by the International Pediatric Association in 1977. Also in 1977, del Mundo was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service. On April 22, 2010, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo awarded del Mundo the Order of Lakandula with the rank of Bayani at the Malacañan Palace. Dr Del Mundo was also the best friend of my late mother-in-law, Mrs. Elena Nieva Jambalos of Boac, Marinduque Source: Wikipedia

Have You Heard of Christine Gambito?
Christine Gambito of HappySlip
Christine Gambito, better known by her screen name HappySlip, is an American Internet personality, actress, and comedian. She maintained one of the most-subscribed-to channels on YouTube, a popular video sharing website. On January 25, 2008, Gambito, who is of Filipino ancestry, was appointed ambassador for Philippine tourism by the Department of Tourism. Happyslip ran from 2006-2011.
In March 2007, Gambito's video Mixed Nuts was nominated for the 2006 YouTube Video Awards for Best Comedy, resulting in second place. In May of the same year, she became one of the first users accepted into YouTube's revenue sharing program.
Gambito's performances typically included comedy sketches in which she impersonates members of her family. She also sings and plays the piano and guitar. Romance by Dmitri Shostakovich
This following is one of my favorite classical piece for the violin and piano. It was composed by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was a Soviet Russian composer and pianist and was one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century.
Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Leon Trotsky's chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, but later had a complex and difficult relationship with the government. Nevertheless, he received accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (1947–1962) and the USSR (from 1962 until death).
After a period influenced by Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky, Shostakovich developed a hybrid style, as exemplified by Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District (1934). This single work juxtaposed a wide variety of trends, including the neo-classical style (showing the influence of Stravinsky) and post-Romanticism (after Gustav Mahler). Sharp contrasts and elements of the grotesque characterize much of his music.
Shostakovich's orchestral works include 15 symphonies and six concerti. Music for chamber ensembles includes 15 string quartets, a piano quintet, two pieces for a string octet, and two piano trios. His piano works include two solo sonatas, an early set of preludes, and a later set of 24 preludes and fugues. Other works include three operas, and a substantial quantity of film music.

Filipino Americans Involvement in US Politics
My next door neighbor and I were recently discussing about political involvement of Filipino-Americans in the political arena in the US. In spite of the fact that there are now close to 4 million Americans with Filipino ancestry, there is no such thing called the Filipino vote. I told my neighbor, It will not be in my lifetime, when the US will elect a President or Vice President, a man or a woman with Filipino blood in his or her ancestry. I have a feeling though that in the next decade we will have a few more Filipino-Americans in the House of Senate and House of Congress.
Today there are only two members of Congress and Senate, since the resignation of Senator John Ensign, the only Filipino American( 1/8 Filipino ancestry)from Nevada. Senator Ensign resigned while being investigated for ethical reasons in May 2011. The Representatives who are Filipino American are:
1.Representative Robert C. Scott ( 1/8 Filipino ancestry) of Virginia, a Democrat and
2.Representative Steve Austria ( 1/2 Filipino ancestry) of Ohio, a Republican
Filipino Americans have been known to be socially conservative. In the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election Republican president George W. Bush won the Filipino American vote over John Kerry by nearly a two-to-one ratio. A similar support for the Republican party occurred during the 2000 election. However, during the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, Filipino Americans voted majority Democratic, with 58% of the community voting for President Barack Obama and only 42% voting for the Republican Candidate, Senator John McCain. The 2008 election marked the first time when a majority of Filipino Americans voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.
It is nearly impossible for Filipino Americans to win an election solely based on the Filipino American vote because they lived in scattered areas all over the US. Majority of the Filipino Americans reside in California, Hawaii, New York, Texas and Illinois. At the national level and state level, Filipino Americans have increased their visibility over the past few decades.
Ben Cayetano, former governor of Hawaii, became the first governor of Filipino descent in the United States. The number of Congress-members of Filipino descent doubled to numbers not reached since 1937, two when the Philippine Islands were represented by non-voting Resident Commissioners, due to the 2000 Senatorial Election. In 2009 there were three Congress-members who claim to have at least one-eighth Filipino ethnicity.
Do you know of a Filipino-American currently active in the political scene in your city, county or in your state?. Can you guess what % of the Filipino-American vote be with the Democratic party this coming November election. My guess will be about 53%. This is 5% less compared to the 2008 election of Barack Obama. I will attribute this loss to Paul Ryan as the VP candidate of the Republican Party.

The September 11 National Memorial and Museum
Today is the 11th Anniversary of the Bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City. I wrote an article last year on the 10th Anniversary of that Holocaust. I titled it, the Day the World Trembled. In that article, I described my personal experience and how my expertise in anti-infectives drug products helped the burnt victims from that catastrophic event. Here are the links to my article: pu.blish.us/article/614/9-11-01-the-day-the-world-trembled-a-prelude-to-the-end-of-the-world or in my blog, http://lifeinus1960present.blogspot.com dated September 11, 2001.
Today I am also posting a short article on the memorial of World Trade Center Bombing called the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum (branded as 9/11 Memorial and 9/11 Memorial Museum) is the principal memorial and museum commemorating the September 11 attacks of 2001, of the World Trade Center bombing that killed and injured thousands of innocents civilians. The memorial is located at the World Trade Center site, on the former location of the Twin Towers destroyed during the attacks. The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation was renamed the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center in 2007.
The winner of the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition was American architect Michael Arad of Handel Architects, a New York- and San Francisco-based firm. Arad worked with landscape architecture firm Peter Walker and Partners on the design which calls for a forest of trees with two square pools in the center, where the Twin Towers once stood.
In August 2006, the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began heavy construction on the memorial and museum.[6] The design is consistent with the original Daniel Libeskind master plan that called for the memorial to be 30 feet below street level (originally 70 feet) in a piazza. The design was the only finalist to throw out Libeskind's requirement that buildings overhang the footprints.
A memorial was planned in the immediate aftermath of the attacks and destruction of the World Trade Center to remember both the victims and those involved in rescue. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center is a non-profit corporation with the mission to raise funds for, program, own and operate the memorial and museum at the World Trade Center site. On September 11, 2011, a dedication ceremony was held at the memorial, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the attacks. The memorial officially opened to the public on September 12, 2011, while the museum will open one year later, on or around September 11, 2012.
Three months after opening, the memorial had been seen by over 1 million visitors. In 2012, Tuesday's Children, a non-profit family service organization that has made a commitment to individuals directly impacted by 9/11 and to those who have lost loved ones to terrorism around the globe, has partnered with the 9/11 Memorial to offer private tours to family members of 9/11 victims and First Responders. My Favorite Television Shows
This week and the next two weeks will be the start of the Fall Season for my favorite Television Shows. This week and next week will also be the finale of four of my favorite TV reality shows, namely, FOX-So you Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD), NBC-America Got Talent (AGT), Bachelor Pad (ABC) and Big Brother (CBS) . The finale for this season for Bachelor Pad is today, Monday, September 10. I am getting curious who will win the quarter million dollars. I enjoy this show because of the cheating, back stubbing, lying and romancing in this reality TV show. Most of the characters are without any class, but real life actors and actresses shedding tears real or imagined. Their acting is not artificial or trained but a true to life experiences.
Big Brother is another reality TV show I like because of the lying, cheating and back stubbing to win 0ne Million dollars. My favorite character this season is Ian- the kid. I also love dance, talent and singing shows, that is why SYTYCD and AGT are two of my favorite reality TV shows.
The first of my favorite reality TV show to premier this week is Survivor (PHILIPPINES),on 9/12, followed by the Voice ( NBC Singing Show) on 9/10 and 9/11, the X Factor ( competing singing show from FOX) on 9/12 and 13, Glee ( 9/13), ABC-Dancing with the Stars ( 9/17) and CBS-Amazing Race (9/30). The premier of American Idol ( singing show) for this season has not been announced since new judges have not been finalized with the exception of Mariah Carey. Three other names mentioned are Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Enrique Iglesias. I hope Enrique Iglesias will be one of the four new judges in American Idol. Two of my other favorite TV shows with new episodes are : Revenge and American Horror Story. If you watched television, what are you favorite show and why are you watching them. If you live in the Philippines, what are your favorite Pinoy shows? I will be delighted to hear from you.

Have You Heard of Maria Isabel Preysler?
Recently, I posted short articles on Julio and Enrique Iglesias in my blogs. The posting today is about Julio's wife and Enrique's famous mother, Maria Isabel Arrastia Preysler.
Here's a video of Isabel PREYSLER with Julio singing, Hey!
María Isabel Preysler Arrastía, better known as Isabel Preysler, (born February 18, 1951) is a Filipino-Spanish journalist, socialite, and television host. Preysler was born in Manila, Philippines, the third of six children to a wealthy family. She attended a private Roman Catholic school; Her father, Carlos Preysler y Pérez de Tagle, was the executive director of Philippine Airlines and on the Board of Directors for El Banco Español de Manila (Spanish Bank of Manila), while her mother, María Beatriz Arrastia y Reynares, was the owner of a real estate company in Manila.
During her youth, Preysler was a model who participated in beauty pageants and charity events for the Sheraton Hotels and Resorts in Manila and went on to win titles in several events. At the age of 16, she migrated to Madrid in Spain to live with her uncle and aunt and to study at Mary Ward College, an Irish Catholic University in Spain, where she studied accounting.
Preysler began working as a journalist for Spanish magazine ¡Hola! in 1970, and her first interviewee was her future husband Julio Iglesias. In 1984, she hosted a Spanish lifestyle television programme, "Hoy en Casa", and has hosted and appeared in various programs since. In May 2001, she was Prince Charles' guest of honour for the opening of his Spanish Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in England. She was his guest of honor again in 2005 at a garden party during a holiday to Spain by the Royal Crown. In 2004, Preysler became Spain's welcoming host for David and Victoria Beckham when she hosted a welcoming party at her house for the celebrity couple. She became close friends with Victoria and was often photographed shopping with her during their stay in Madrid.
Preysler continues to be the national spokesmodel for Ferrero Rocher, Suárez jewelry, Manolo Blahnik shoes, Chrysler cars and Porcelanosa tiles, for which American Hollywood actor George Clooney recently worked with her in 2006 to represent the brand in an advertising campaign. Readers at Hola magazine have voted Preysler as the most elegant and best-dressed woman in Spain for 1991, 2002,2006 and 2007.
In 2006, Preysler was also honored along with Hillary Clinton, Shakira and Yoko Ono among others with the Women Together Award, which honors women for their philanthropical contributions to the United Nations in New York, making her the first Filipino woman in history to win the award. In 2007, she and her daughters were invited by Prince Charles to be guests of honour at his London home, Clarence House.
Preysler married the Marques de Griñón, Carlos Falcó, on March 23, 1980. The short-lived marriage resulted in the birth of a second daughter, Tamara Falcó. Her third and current marriage is to former Spanish finance minister Miguel Boyer, with whom she had another daughter, Ana Boyer.
In 1987, her two sisters immigrated to Spain with their families to be closer to Isabel. She holds dual citizenship in both the Philippines and Spain. Her father, Carlos Preysler, is deceased and her mother, Beatriz Preysler, lives in Miami with Isabel's son Enrique Iglesias. Source: Wikipedia
Please note that this is my first article on a series of articles, I am planning to write on famous Filipinos, pure or of mixed ancestry, living or dead in the field of entertainment, sports, politics, science and philanthropy. If you know of any names, please feel free to inform me.

Enrique Iglesias, Like Father, Like Son
Last month I wrote a short posting on Julio Iglesias- my wife's favorite ballad singer. I believe is now semi-retired. Yesterday, there was news report that his son Enrique is now being seriously considered as one of the 4 judges in the coming American Idol season. If this is true, he will be a magnet not only for young viewers, but for older viewers like me. Here are two of his most popular videos, I like it and Addicted. Enjoy!
Enrique Iglesias (born Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler; May 8, 1975) is a Spanish singer, songwriter and occasional actor, popular in both the Latin market and the Hispanic American market in the United States. He is the son of the famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias. Within five years of beginning his musical career in the 1990s, he became the biggest seller of Spanish-language albums of that decade. He made his crossover into the mainstream English language market before the turn of the millennium, signing a multi-album deal with Universal Music Group for an unprecedented US$50,000,000 with Universal Music Latino to release his Spanish albums and Interscope to release English albums. In 2010, he parted with Interscope and signed with another Universal Music Group label, Universal Republic.
Iglesias has sold over 55 million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling Spanish language artists of all time. He has had five Billboard Hot 100 top five singles, including two number-ones, and holds the record for producing 22 number-one Spanish-language singles on the Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks. He has also had ten number-one songs on Billboard's Dance charts, more than any other single male artist. Altogether, Iglesias has amassed 68 number-one songs on the various Billboard charts. Billboard has called him The King of Latin Pop and The King of Dance. Billboard also named Enrique the number two Latin artist of the years 1986–2011 (Luis Miguel taking the first spot)

Our Weekly Escapade to the Indian Casinos
If you have been following my blogs, you probably know that our weekly entertainment consist of an afternoon visit( 1-6 PM) to the Indian Casinos not too far from our residence here in Northern California. Our visit is not only to play the slots machines but also to partake the buffet ( Seafood) and food at the several restaurants in the Casinos at very reasonable prices. Oftentimes we received $10 of free dining coupons or we can used our accumulated points for food or gift items. We also have free plays varying from $5 to $15 every week
There are two Indian Casinos only about 30 minutes drive from our residence. I will call them Casino A and Casino B. My wife and I go to Casino A three times a month and we go to Casino B, once a month. For the last two years, along with my wife we take along our next door neighbor who is a widow and enjoy the ride with us. The three us of us have a weekly budget for this activity. So far our weekly trip to the Casinos had not sent us to the poor house. The most important of all, we are not yet addicted to the slot machines.
This week, I met two complete strangers in Casino A and I realized they are slot machines addicts.
The first stranger was a retired Filipino about 65 years old. I thought at first he was Chinese until he talk to me in Tagalog. He told me he just live nearby and go to the Casinos every day. I notice he was not betting minimum on the slots similar to the slots I am playing. He placed $100 in the machine and bet 0.90 cents each time while I am only betting 0.30 cents, the minimum bet required. We both played side by side for about one hour. After one hour my balance was still around $20 the amount I bet at the beginning. In the meantime the Filipino stranger balance in his machine was only about $15. He kept on complaining that the machines are stingy today. He also informed me that his children has been telling him to stop going to the Casinos everyday. I just listened and from his ramblings, I know he has already an addiction to the slot machines.
After another 5 minutes, my machine yielded a Bonus Play ( 15 free plays). It gave me about $8.00. It was time to go and play another slot machine. I have a modus operandi, that once the machine gave the bonus round, it is time to move on. However, sometimes , I forget and get carried away and it is almost sure, I will lose my bonus winning if I do not move to another machine.
This week I met another stranger ( A Caucasian man in his 50's) in the non-smoking section of Casino A. I have a favorite machine in that section. It is a new machine with statistics and amazing sound effects. The week before I hit the bonus round in this machine which gave me 100 free plays and resulted in the winning of $100 from a 30 cents bet. Luckily, the machine was vacant. I placed $20. My bet was minimum as usual ( 0.30 cents).
The gentleman by my side playing a similar machine, was betting 90 cents per play. I notice his balance was $390. I asked him if that is his winnings. He said no, since he had already placed about $600 in the machine. Then he started complaining that the Casinos are cheaters, since he always is losing. I mentioned that the Casinos here are to make money. He commented that at least they should program the machine that our CHANCE OF WINNING IS A AT LEAST 10%. I then told him of my winning the bonus of $100 resulting from my minimum bet, the week before. He said it is a miracle that I won that amount from a minimum bet. All of a sudden I hit a bonus play giving me 25 free plays. It gave me $40. When the guy saw it, he was so upset and left his machine still complaining about his bad luck. In my case, it was time to quit and enjoy some dinner. At the end of 6 hours of playing, I lost only $20 but have the grandest time in my life. In the meantime my wife is also enjoying her afternoon. My wife did not loss any money and was playing on Casino money all afternoon, whereas our neighbor lost all her allowance for the week.
My wife, our neighbor and I are looking forward for next week for our Casino Escapade. Will it be Casino A or B? This will depend on the free plays we will receive next week.
For those of you who have not been to the Indian Casinos in Northern California.: The Casinos are well equipped with new slot machines and as modern as the Casinos in Reno, Lake Tahoe or Las Vegas, Nevada. Casinos A or B gave us the amenities and joys of slot machines gambling without the hassles of driving for several hours to either Lake Tahoe, Reno or Las Vegas.

Rain Man-Academy Award Winner Movie, 1988
Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a Los Angeles car dealer in his mid-twenties, is in the middle of importing four grey market Lamborghinis. The deal is being threatened by the EPA, and if Charlie cannot meet its requirements he will lose a significant amount of money. After some quick subterfuge with an employee, Charlie leaves for a weekend trip to Palm Springs with his girlfriend, Susanna (Valeria Golino).
Charlie's trip is cancelled by news that his estranged father, Sanford Babbitt, has died. Charlie travels to Cincinnati, Ohio, to settle the estate, where he learns an undisclosed trustee is inheriting $3 million on behalf of an unnamed beneficiary, while all he is to receive is a classic Buick Roadmaster convertible and several prize rose bushes. Eventually he learns the money is being directed to a mental institution, which is the home of his brother with autism, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), of whose existence Charlie was previously unaware. This leads Charlie to ask the question that permeates the movie: "Why didn't somebody tell me I had a brother?"
Although Raymond has autism, he also has superb recall, albeit usually with little understanding of the subject matter, and extreme skill in mathematics. He is said to be a savant by some doctors. He is frightened by change and adheres to strict routines (for example, his continual repetition of the "Who's on First?" sketch). Except when he is in distress, he shows little emotional expression and avoids eye contact. Numbed by learning that he has a brother and determined to get what he believes is his fair share of the Babbitt estate, Charlie takes Raymond on what becomes a cross-country car trip (due to Raymond's fear of flying) back to Los Angeles to meet with his attorneys.
Charlie intends to start a custody battle in order to get Raymond's doctor, Dr. Gerald R. Bruner (Jerry Molen), to settle out of court for half of Sanford Babbitt's estate so that the mental institution can maintain custody of Raymond. Susanna, disgusted by Charlie's self-centeredness and his attempts at using his brother as a pawn to gain the money, leaves Charlie in Cincinnati and disappears. During the course of the journey, Charlie learns about Raymond's autism, which he initially believes is curable — resulting in his frequent frustration with his brother's antics. He also learns about how his brother came to be separated from his family, as a result of an accident when he was left alone with Charlie when Charlie was a baby.
Raymond also sings "I Saw Her Standing There" by The Beatles like he did when Charlie was young, prompting Charlie to realize that Raymond is the protective figure from his childhood, whom he falsely remembered as an imaginary friend named "Rain Man." Charlie proves to be sometimes shallow and exploitative, as when he learns that Raymond has an excellent memory and takes him to Las Vegas to win money at blackjack by counting cards. However, towards the end of their trip Charlie finds himself becoming protective of Raymond, and grows to truly love him.
Charlie finally meets with his attorney to try to get his share of his inheritance, but then decides that he no longer cares about the money and really just wants to have custody of his brother. However, at a meeting with a court-appointed psychiatrist and Dr. Bruner, Raymond is unable to decide exactly what he wants. Eventually, the psychiatrist presses Raymond to make the decision, upsetting him and leading Charlie to request that the doctor back off. Raymond is allowed to go back home to Cincinnati. Charlie, who has gained a new brother and mellowed considerably, promises Raymond as he boards an Amtrak train that he will visit in two weeks. Rain Man was the Academy Award winner movie in 1988.

It is Deja Vu at the Katague Household
Our Six Grandchild, Christmas, 2011
It is deja vu time at the Katague household. My mind flashes back about 35 years ago, when our oldest son was a student at UC Berkeley. The University of California in Berkeley was only about 30 minutes from our residence at that time. Our son would come home every other weekend to do his laundry and raid our food pantry and refrigerator. My wife does not mind it if our son will just informed us what items he is taking to his coop House( the Cloyne Court) that week, so she could replenish our supply. However, sometimes, our son forgets to inform us what food items he took. My wife will just later realized it was gone. My wife gets upset and it was time to give our son another lecture on how to continue communicating with us.
The raiding of our food pantry by our oldest son stopped after he went to Law school. This time the school was about an hour drive from us and he was busy with his homework even on weekends. However when our oldest daughter went to college, the raiding of our food pantry on weekends resumed. This ended when she moved to an apartment with a couple of her girl friends. The next year our youngest son went to College at UC Davis. He stayed at the Frat House and seldom returns home to do his laundry, so the raiding of our food pantry stopped. The raiding of our food pantry resumed when our youngest daughter went to UC Berkeley. However this was not that often since our daughter was staying in the dorm and because of her involvement with Cheer Leading, she seldom goes home on weekends. However on several occasions, she invited a dozen of her football friends to have a typical Filipino Feast in our House. My wife was very happy to cook for her college friends from UC Berkeley, mostly football players and cheer leaders.
Yesterday, after 35 years of hiatus, the raiding of our refrigerator and food pantry resumed. Our oldest grandson who is now in college ( Sacramento State University) visited us to do his laundry. The university is only about 20 minutes from our residence. We invited him and his mother( our oldest daughter) who was helping him settled in his dorm for dinner. My wife cooked an two additional Cornish Hens for him to take back to his dorm.
This episode in the Katague household tells us time is passing by pretty fast. Our grandson is now 21 years old. In a couple of years, he will be graduating from college. Then maybe he will get married ( he has a steady girlfriend already) and gave us our first great grand child. We hope my wife and I are still healthy and have a clear mind when that time comes. For now it is deja vu time on the raiding of our food pantry and refrigerator.
